Hi Compost wise! Thank you for the valuable insight you gave to this article! Beat wished from Pa.
We count on the law to protect us. But when beneficial laws lapse, we expect our representatives to ensure we remain protected. Unfortunately, political agendas can eclipse and stall even the most needed legislation. It is under circumstances that we must remind our representatives of what is important to us.
The famous singer Katy Perry was the victim of a stalker, which may not be unusual for a pop star, but still represents a serious crime that needs attention. The police put a restraining order on her stalker, William Edward Terry; however, when Mr. Terry failed to show at his…
Domestic Violence Agencies Need New Protocols for Fund Allocation
With the most recent death of Hollywood star Amie Harwick to domestic violence, the spotlight re-shifts to how domestic violence agencies fall short when it comes to protecting victims. It’s also a reminder that domestic violence reform needs to be reconstructed and distributed, so fewer lives are lost.
On February 16th, 2020, Amie Harwick was strangled and thrown off the balcony of her own apartment complex by her ex-boyfriend Gareth Pursehouse. The restraining order Harwick had against her ex had expired a few weeks prior (CNN, 2020).
The Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence Is Imploding
When I first became acquainted with the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence (FCADV), it was to expose the egregious way the agency had mishandled victim cases. A client went to them seeking help after being wrongfully framed in a domestic violence abuse incident. That client’s name is Amy Ballon. The FCADV’s negligence of not conducting background checks and not having a written policy in place to make them mandatory, led to Amy, an already vulnerable victim, getting revictimized by their agency staff member. …
Status of Domestic Violence Protection In 2020
As January is National Stalking Awareness Month, I wanted to honor victims by reviewing past and present domestic violence laws, and current progress made in combatting it. It’s a known fact that the Trump Administration did not renew the Violence Against Women Act (VAMA) last year. That decision has already proven to be a short-sighted grave mistake on their part.
Domestic violence takes many forms, some more insidious than others. It can verbal, physical, or done with cyberstalking warfare. With all the technological breakthroughs in our society over the last several decades, cyberstalking…
When my Daughter proposed the idea of having a Netherland Dwarf Bunny join the family, I relented for several reasons. First, the online photo she showed made me all mushy and gushy, and I couldn’t resist the cuteness factor. Additionally, my Daughter’s Guinea Pig Ophelia was also almost six years old and a cranky older adult at that. They live in captivity for six to eight years, so I knew her time to leave us was very soon. I also naively thought that Ophelia maybe friends with Oliver, and would enjoy the company in her senior years.
We all process death uniquely and at our own pace, that is the nature of the beast. In my mind, that also applies to the pending departure of a loved one. With Fall right around the corner and the leaves dying, I guess it prompted my Nine-year-old Son Quinton, who is on the Autism Spectrum, to ponder when his Nana dies. Nana is my Mom, and they are incredibly close. He must have been having a telepathic warning because a week later, my Mom was in the hospital with a septic infection in her spine. Thankfully, my Mom is at…
What A Tree Revealed About Autism
A story about growth in a boy and a tree
Love arrives at such unexpected moments
My story revolves around the Fourth of July in 2019 when my family and I left the crowded suburbs of Philadelphia and drove to spend the weekend at my brother and sister-in-law’s home in the country. My son Quinton, who is on the autism spectrum, was about to turn nine and was looking forward to returning to this beautiful sprawling property where he could go exploring to his heart’s content. …
How a Momma Robin Put Faith Back In My Heart
About three weeks ago, my kids and I came upon some bird eggs in a nest. The Mama Robin was brilliant about where she had built the nest;
She chose shelter from the rain, wind, and any dangerous predator that may be lurking in the area. It was a spot extremely hard for humans or other animals to access, and not a place anyone would think to look. Since discovering the nest, my daughter and I would go out every morning, afternoon, and evening to check on the eggs. …
